Neil Rogers gone forever

FORT LAUDERDALE - The Neil Rogers era in South Florida radio is over. Rogers, for most of the past 33 years the most popular talk host in the market, has reached an agreement that removes his 10 a.m.-2 p.m. program from WQAM (AM 560) immediately. It will be replaced by a sports program.Reached at his Toronto home, where the show has originated in recent years, Rogers answered the phone with, "Can't talk at all, under penalty of death."Rogers' attorney, Norman Kent, is quoted in a WQAM announcement saying, "Mr. Rogers has no intention of seeking other on-air work at this time and has directed me not to seek any such employment, though under our agreement with WQAM, this is not prohibited."

Michael Mayo: A farewell ode to Neil Rogers, local radio legend

In an interview Kent said the statement was worked out between him and the station, "So there's really nothing more to add."Rogers, 66, worked at WKAT, WNWS, WINZ, Zeta 4 and WIOD before joining WQAM in 1997. He said he isn't going to work in radio again."This is it," Rogers said. "The guy who [regularly] called up and said, 'Retire!' is finally getting his way."Asked if he would miss doing a daily show, Rogers said emphatically, "No .ƒ.ƒ. like hemorrhoids."Rogers had a five-year contract that runs through 2013, which set his salary in the range of $750,000-$800,000 annually. The WQAM announcement said Rogers would serve as a consultant. Given the animosity between the two parties, this might be a bookkeeping device to justify whatever financial agreement was reached.Bad blood had been simmering. In May, WQAM fired Rogers' longtime producer, Jorge Rodriguez. On May 18, Rogers, weary of listener comments about Rodriguez, blurted out a profanity aimed at station management. Rogers said he immediately reached for the button that allows seven seconds to delete anything before it gets on the air. However, the button was not working and the expletive aired. Rogers was suspended for three days with pay.Rogers also said the station was pressing him to give up his relaxed summer schedule, which required him to work only two days a week. Rogers was adamant he wouldn't do this.Rogers often complained that Beasley lawyers had ordered him to strip his program of bawdy material, which, he said, took away his show. Monday, it was taken away in total.

STARDATE 2009. Popular culture is under renewed attack from a cult phenomenon known as Star Trek.

More than four decades, six TV series and 10 films since the crew of the Enterprise first pledged “to boldly go where no man has been before”, Captain Kirk and his pointy-eared sidekick Spock are back. But with the franchise in a tailspin after flop TV series Enterprise and disappointing 2002 film Nemesis, all eyes are on director JJ Abrams and his cast to see whether they can right the Starship. The original 1966 series wasn’t an instant hit but through re-runs on TV it won over a legion of Trekkies, who can still be found spouting Klingon at fan conventions in their droves. Such is the impact of Star Trek on modern culture, that even the staunchest non-fan could reluctantly pull a Vulcan salute and would know that if you need beaming up, Scotty’s your man. So how do you tackle a new film to bring the brand back up to warp speed and attract a new generation of fans, without offending Trekkies at the same time? << MORE >>

DOA  (1950)

Small-town accountant Frank Bigelow goes to San Francisco for a week's fun prior to settling down with fiancée Paula. After a night on the town, he wakes up with more than just a hangover; doctors tell him he's been given a "luminous toxin" with no antidote and has, at most, a week to live! Not knowing who did it or why, Bigelow embarks on a frantic odyssey to find his own murderer.  Compelling little film noir obviously made on a low budget, though still is impressive today. O'Brien plays a CPA who was given a slow-acting toxic poison and tries to solve who gave it to him and why before times run out. Performances are definitely first-rate, however as the mystery unfolds it becomes exciting to follow. Remade in 1988.

A picture as excitingly different as its title!

Doomed to Die

Shipping magnate Cyrus Wentworth, downcast over a disaster to his ocean liner 'Wentworth Castle' (carrying, oddly enough, an illicit shipment of Chinese bonds) is shot in his office...at the very moment of kicking out his daughter's fiance Dick Fleming. Of course, Captain Street arrests Dick, but reporter Bobbie Logan, the attractive thorn in Street's side, is so convinced he's wrong that she enlists the help of detective James Lee Wong to find the real killer.

Swamp Women

A plucky police woman infiltrates a group of hardened female criminals who are planning to break jail and retrieve their loot of diamonds from its swampy hiding place. Complications arise when the women abduct Connors and begin fighting each other. Swamp Women, produced in 1955, was the first film ever directed by Roger Corman. Flaming passions against a background of weird adventure! The film follows undercover police officer Lee Hampton after she infiltrates a prison, befriends three female convicts, and helps them all escape. In reality, this planned escape is part of a larger plot to find a diamond stash hidden deep within the swamps of Louisiana. Small boats can run forever on a tank full  of gas, and can accommodate supplies for a party of six for many days.

He played apes in "White Gorilla", and "Killer Apes" and the role of "It" in "It, the Terror from Beyond Space" (1958).

Midnight Manhunt

Midnight Manhunt (1945)

Reporter Sue Gallagher (Ann Savage from Detour) finds an infamous gangster's corpse in a wax museum. Her desire for a scoop is hindered by a meddling rival (William Gargan), the museum's goofy maintenance man (Leo Gorcey), and the ruthless killer (B-horror king George Zucco). Leo Gorcey Scores Again

An exciting mystery-comedy, with Leo Gorcey at his best. It's in good old black and white, increasing the intensity of each scene. A movie to be treasured.

British Intelligence (1940)

During WWI pretty German master spy Helene von Lorbeer is sent undercover to London to live with the family of a high-placed British official where she is to rendezvous with the butler Valdar, also a spy, and help him transmit secret war plans back to Germany.  This is not a film for casual viewing. Pay close attention from the very beginning and you will be rewarded by being able to follow the twists and turns as this intelligently scripted, complex plot unfolds.  Boris Karloff plays a domestic servant involved in espionage during World War I, in a film that is filled with so many double agents that you won't be able to figure out who is on which side until the film ends.
